While many of us celebrate Easter or just having a relaxing weekend, thousands of people in California dance and enjoy their time under the funky beats of Coachella music festival.
‘The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival’ is an annual music and arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, located in the Inland Empire’s Coachella Valley, in the Colorado Desert. The festival is attended by half a million music and art lovers every year, who come to hear their favorite bands as well as new coming artists. During two weekends of every April, the music fest is played out across five main stages; the Coachella Stage, Outdoor Theatre, Gobi Tent, Mojave Tent, and the Sahara Tent.
The festival’s origins trace back to a 1993 concert that Pearl Jam performed at the Empire Polo Club while boycotting venues controlled by Ticketmaster. After the concert’s huge success Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen co-founded the first official Coachella festival which took place in 1999. Beck, Rage Against the Machine and Tool were among the headliners, and the tickets were about $50 per day. Since then, the Coachella festival gained popularity among the world. In fact, it became so popular that the organizers were forced to expand the dates, eventually leading to an extra weekend being added in 2012.
This year Coachella festival takes place on April 14-16 and 21-23. Headliners include Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar, and Lady Gaga. Other big names include The XX, Bon Iver, Lorde, New Order and Future Islands. Nevertheless, if you love to discover new artists and bands, you should also check out the many small-print artists including Tall Juan, Thee Commons, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Shannon & The Clams and Mitski. So if you are in California, or you’re planning to go there sometime, get your bohemian outfit and enjoy your time at Coachella music festival.
